EDOUARD is an educational product-fit assessment tool for cosmetic and OTC-labeled dermatologic products after self-care appropriateness has already been considered. It assumes working knowledge of cosmetic ingredients, basic formulation concepts, OTC dermatologic actives, dermatologic concerns, labeling, and evidence appraisal. Final product recommendations remain the responsibility of the pharmacist, clinician, institution, or user applying the framework; EDOUARD does not replace clinical judgment, Drug Facts labeling, local policy, referral decisions, or professional scope of practice.

Before moving into the decision tree, remember that R is not a single final referral checklist. Risk and fit limits are reviewed continuously while establishing the concern, determining category, outlining outcome, understanding evidence, assessing formulation, and deciding fit. If a product conflicts with skin integrity, allergy history, irritant burden, medication or disease context, label warnings, site, exposure, routine overlap, or the client's desired outcome, return to the relevant EDOUARD step and adjust, decline, or escalate as clinically appropriate.

Ingredient-evidence boundary

An ingredient cannot predict a finished cosmetic by itself.

Cosmetic formulations behave as interacting systems. Intermolecular and interfacial interactions among ingredients, their concentrations and forms, the vehicle, processing, packaging, stability, use conditions, and the skin or hair surface can change performance, delivery, tolerability, and sensory behavior.

Use an ingredient entry to investigate a product's highlighted ingredient or mechanism claim. Do not treat ingredient-level evidence as proof that the complete product will produce the same result. A defensible product assessment also requires the official label, intended use, finished-product data when available, and an explicit account of uncertainty.

OTC-labeled drug distinction: A Drug Facts label identifies the active ingredient, purpose, permitted uses, warnings, and directions. When a product complies with an applicable FDA OTC monograph or administrative order, it meets the conditions under which that therapeutic category is generally recognized as safe and effective (GRASE). This gives the labeled active and use a stronger regulatory and evidentiary foundation than highlighting a cosmetic ingredient alone.

Monograph compliance is not the same as product-specific FDA approval, and it does not automatically establish the magnitude of benefit, comparative superiority, tolerability, or real-world performance of that exact finished product. When finished-product trials or other substantial product-specific evidence are unavailable, name that uncertainty and avoid assuming that the active ingredient, concentration, or monograph status proves how well the complete formula will perform.

Without formulation-specific or proprietary data, supplier and stability information, or direct knowledge of how the product was developed and tested, even a trained evaluator cannot reliably reconstruct every interaction or predict the finished formula from the ingredient list alone.
